La Colonial, S.A., Compañía de Seguros operates under the guidelines established by Law No. 146-02, which regulates private insurance in the Dominican Republic. La Colonial was founded on July 28, 1971, and began operations three months later, on October 29 of the same year. After 50 years of operations, it is at the top of the Dominican insurance market, currently being the only Dominican insurer with an Excellent (A-) rating from A.M. Best. A.M. Best's ratings reflect profitable net results and more than adequate capitalization in risk management. La Colonial's consistently positive investment income levels have resulted in historically favorable profits, which have allowed the company to continue strengthening its capitalization in line with its risk levels. La Colonial ranks among the top five private insurers in the Dominican Republic in terms of premium income and is the only one in this group with both indicators above market averages.
